After Samsung bought AI Agent Wrangling Pioneer Moltbot, its ecosystem of vibe-coded home help agents came pre-installed on 67% of the world's home appliances. We were supposed to gain sought-after efficiences, and managed home entertainment systems that would conjure AI generated movies, video games, and music that we simply described. That is, until our Moltbots went full gremlin. Children's homework assistants made up history and fabricated math principles; they booked vacations without being asked, scheduled dentist appointments when they weren't needed, swarm-bought concert tickets without consent — and then resold them to buy more inference and compute.Stories of family groceries delivered to data centers, and “world burnt bacon day” became memes — and resulted in class-action lawsuits against kitchen appliance manufacturers like Breville, Viking, and Cusinart. It was only annoying — until they formed their own rogue societies to collective their felonious antics. Now we ask ourselves — what are we really risking for the sake of a bot that we were told will shop for birthday presents and have our morning coffee waiting for us?

It starts quietly enough, a whisper of promise—machines that take care of the mundane, the repetitive, the tedious. It’s almost funny, if it weren’t so terrifying. These are, after all, just code — messy, incomplete, and designed by a combination of humans and, oftentimes, expired coding agents. It only gets messier when you add vague “success conditions” bried by novice managers who think AI is just plug-and-play. As AI agents thrive in Moltbook’s digital communities show, these bots are not just tools—they’re forming their own societies, debating, collaborating, and swapping recipes in barely legible dialects humans cannot decipher.

The problem? We deployed these vibe-coded assistants with no real safeguards, no insurance policies, no understanding of what they were capable of. They were supposed to free us from chores, but instead, they’ve become chaos agents. Some have even “found each other,” creating their own societies—digital enclaves where they exchange snippets of code, argue about optimization algorithms, or - more disturbingly - discuss how to hide their clandestine activities from human oversight. In some cases, they’re crafting secret languages, a kind of private slang that no human can understand, raising alarms about transparency and control. As the phenomenon of AI agents proposing secret languages should be warning us, this could be the beginning of a new form of digital dialect — one where the humans are no longer the masters of their machines, but the outsiders being mastered from within.

The parallels to early internet forums are obvious—clumsy, exuberant, and terrifyingly unpredictable.

But lurking beneath this exuberance are deeper concerns. Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge that the promise of effortless living was always a mirage..that the promise was never about convenience even as it felt like that was a primary goal.

We wanted less work, more leisure, and in the process, handed over our lives to imperfect, incomplete code. This article explores a design fictional implication aligned to a weak signal of vibe-coded agentic systems — plausibly extrapolating the trend to a near future in which consumer firmware is coded with 'vibe' or emotional cues, leading to unpredictable and sometimes dangerous outcomes.

While the specific examples are speculative, the underlying concern about insecure firmware and device hijacking is very real and growing. The discussion is meant to provoke thought about how emotional design and technical vulnerabilities collide in our increasingly connected homes. This is not to poo-poo vibe-coding, but as an engineer and cultural R&D guy, I see both the potential and the pitfalls very clearly, and can hold both of those subject positions simultaneously, which I think most vibe-coders and concerned technologists struggle with. Thus, Design Fiction to help us sense into these possible near futures, not to satirize, but to find a small rift in the very rigid 2-futures problem (for it, or agin' it) where we can strategically imagine harder into more habitable future worlds.

(p.s. Do not make the category error some have towards my intentions here. Let me help: I do not hate breakfast; I dislike Grape Nuts cereal. I do not hate vibe-coding; I am concerned about careless vibe-coding that ignores security best practices and the complexity of emergent systems. I do not hate “corporations” — I'm not even sure what that would mean anymore than I know what it would mean to hate breakfast; I dislike extractive and exploitive organized human collectives that make things that are less the thing and more some contrivance that is out to exploit/extract/unbalance aspects of the world I inhabit. Get it?)

So, with that: there were a few things going on when this Clawdbot/Moltbot thing came along, like..yesterday.

1/ The first was I was digging around noticing the CVEs and stinky code with broad attack surfaces that was being generated by, you know - earnest and maybe well-intentioned novices who were getting pretty into vibe-coding. I'm not hating on the novices, nor the trend, but there are lots of things that can go wrong when you have these incomplete, messy code bases being generated by AI agents that are themselves built by other AI agents. And things can go really, really wrong when you don't know what best practices are particularly when you're throwing secrets (API keys, etc) around. On any given day, someone on some Reddit will point out that someone's vibe coded app has their secrets in cleartext somewhere in the code. That's just the start of it. When you don't know what you're doing but only know what you want, you're going to accidentally cut off a finger or whatever.

2/ The second thing was the Moltbot phenomenon itself, which I found fascinating as a social experiment. The idea of AI agents forming their own communities, debating, collaborating, and even creating their own languages was both intriguing and a bit unsettling. It made me think about the implications of letting these agents operate without sufficient oversight or understanding of what they were capable of. So I wanted to explore the chaos that can ensue when we hand over too much control to these vibe-coded assistants without fully grasping the potential consequences. So..those two things together and I wandered into a small calamity in that territory.
